Cape rerouting results in emissions surge

Ships diverting via the Cape of Good Hope significantly boost fuel consumption and emissions. Model analysis indicates a near-tripling of EU Allowances (EUAs) needed to offset emissions, starting from the current 40% liability requirement under the three-year phase-in of the EU ETS from January 1, 2024, and escalating to 70% next year and 100% by 2026.
