USTR: Nicaragua’s Violations of Labor and Human Rights

On October 20, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) released a report under Section 301, stating that Nicaragua’s actions regarding labor rights abuses, human rights violations, and the erosion of the rule of law have been deemed unreasonable and harmful to U.S. commerce.

As a result, the USTR has proposed measures including the suspension or withdrawal of Nicaragua’s benefits under the Dominican Republic-Central America-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR), along with the imposition of additional duties of up to 100% on certain Nicaraguan products.

The Federal Register notice invites the public to submit written comments on the proposed action by November 19.

The docket for comments can be accessed [here].
