Section 232 Action Targets Semiconductor

On January 14, President Trump issued a proclamation following a Section 232 investigation, determining that imports of certain semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and related products pose a national security risk. A 25% tariff will apply to specified advanced computing chips from all countries, effective January 15, 2026, as detailed in this annex.

The Department of Commerce will report on data center semiconductor markets by July 1 to inform potential tariff adjustments. The U.S. Trade Representative and Commerce Department will continue negotiations to address national security concerns, with the president able to impose further tariffs based on the outcomes.
