Impact of Federal Shutdown on Transportation and Logistics

A federal government shutdown that began on October 1 is disrupting several trade and customs-related functions across U.S. agencies.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will maintain essential operations—including tariff collection, cargo inspection, and enforcement—while nonessential activities such as planning, research and development, and policy initiatives are temporarily suspended.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to keeping the trade community informed, stating that any operational updates resulting from a prolonged shutdown will be communicated through future public calls and CSMS messages.

Meanwhile, the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) announced on October 1 that it has suspended all operations and furloughed its entire staff, with the exception of its three commissioners, in accordance with the shutdown.
